The working principle of reverse demulsifiers: Changing interface properties
Reverse demulsifier can adsorb on the oil-water interface of water-in-oil emulsions, changing the wettability and interfacial tension of the interface. By reducing the interfacial tension, water droplets are more likely to coalesce, thereby destabilizing the emulsion.
For example, the lipophilic groups in reverse demulsifier will face the oil phase and the hydrophilic groups will face the water phase, making the surface of water droplets originally wrapped by the oil phase become hydrophilic, promoting water droplets to approach each other and coalesce into large droplets to achieve oil-water separation.
Neutralizing charges
Water droplets in water-in-oil emulsions usually carry a certain negative charge. Reverse demulsifier for separating oil from water can neutralize these charges, reducing the electrostatic repulsion between water droplets and promoting their coalescence.
